My Schedule

By: Laurie Heggedal

Sunday September 6, 2015 – Wind Rivers, WY

  • 6:30am – Wake up (…in a cold, wet tent that came loose multiple times during the previous night due to the harsh winds)
  • 7:00am – Breakfast (…that consisted of boiled water that we had to climb down and up a steep hill to the stream for, and leftover oatmeal and biscuits that was made over our tiny portable stove)
  • 8:00am – Hiking (…two miles on trail across several river and stream crossings to our destination by the wilderness boundary)
  • 10:30am – Arrive at destination (…where the NOLS instructors were waiting for us with smiles and Jolly Ranchers candy)
  • 11:30am – Debrief (…for the last time, sharing stories of our Independent Student Guided Expedition and what we have learned)
  • 3:00pm – Geology lesson (…by the infamous geologist and NOLS instructor, Andy Clifford, with the Wind Rivers’ scenery as our classroom)
  • 5:00pm – Dinner (…which was a sad ordeal, since every group had little food left from the ration to choose from)
  • 7:30pm – Reflection (…spent remembering and retelling stories and lessons from our 25-day expedition)
  • 9:00pm – Bedtime (…in our sleeping bags, outside of the tent for the first time, so that we could enjoy the beautiful stars)

Sunday September 13, 2015 – Pine Ridge, SD

  • 5:45am – Wake up (…to go for a run, but we all ended up hitting the Snooze button because we were too exhausted from the previous day)
  • 6:45am – Actually wake up (…and take a three-and-a-half minute shower, which is half of a minute over the time that one is allowed to shower for water conservation purposes. I think my parents would be proudly surprised of my efficient shower time!)
  • 7:30am – Breakfast (…of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and fruit, cereal, and hot chocolate with creamer)
  • 8:30am – History immersion discussion (…of the American Indians and how the Re-Member organization works to help the reservation while educating the volunteers of the culture)
  • 10:00am – Hike (…in the Badlands, taking 30 minutes of quiet time to reflect and admire the scenery)
  • 12:00pm – Lunch (…of sandwiches, chips, and cookies at a picnic table in the shade)
  • 1:00pm – Tour Feather II (…which is Re-Member’s construction site for their new facilities that would increase job availabilities and education)
  • 2:30pm – Speaker on Wounded Knee (…who discussed the events and impacts of the Massacre at Wounded Knee)
  • 5:00pm – Dinner (…of pasta, green beans, apple sauce, and salad)
  • 7:00pm – Speaker (…who talked about American Indian culture and beliefs, and how the volunteers at Re-Member help and learn from the American Indians)
  • 9:00pm – Reflection (…led by our visiting staff member, Steve, who prompted us to express how we felt about the different things we have witnessed so far on the Pine Ridge reservation)
  • 10:30pm – Bedtime (…in comfortable bunk-beds in between soft sheets and pillows)
