In a Beach Town

By: Marta Djalleta

In my many travels, I have been fortunate enough to visit a decent amount of beach towns. Although the culture has varied in each, I have found there to be universal similarities between these different locations. There is something about the calm serene ocean tide pulling in and the relaxing ambiance, that makes the inhabitants of these beach towns seem effortlessly happy and content with themselves and where they are.

In Cahuita, this proved to be very true. The resort we were staying at was located off of a rocky road in the middle of the forest and was just a short walk away from the beach. Animals roamed around freely, Buddha statues lined the property, and the overall environment felt like a zen garden.

While in the town of Cahuita, we were able to visit the national park, which similar to our resort, was a beautiful cross between a tropical forest and a white sandy beach. The ocean was some of the warmest water that I have ever been in and provided for an overall serene morning at the beach. After that, I had an amazing lunch at a café practically on the beach. One gorgeous blonde woman was effortlessly running this café by herself and made our meals from scratch, which turned out to be delicious. When we left the beach we were greeted with the sound of some calypso musicians covering Bob Marley songs and the vibrant smells of the other restaurants in the street.

Later when we went back into town and were surrounded by a similar ambiance. Despite the various restaurants that were on this one street, everyone came together outside on the streets, outside of bars, and in the small parks alongside the road. There was an intense game of ping-pong that many of the men were crowded around and intently watching who would miss the ball first. It was really amazing to see such a small community come out solely to have a good time. Everyone was mingling and seemed genuinely happy in this very inviting place.

Thus proves my theory that almost anywhere in the world, you will find serenity, joy, and relaxation in a beach town.
